Jamn adds former MTV's Real World cast member to Ramiro's House

Clear Channel Boston announced today that former MTV's Real World star is the new co-host of Ramiro's House morning show on WJMN/Jamn 94-5. Feldman replaces long-time veteran Pebbles who left the station in early December and will be hosting a morning show on the new rhythmic pop competitor WTKK/Hot 96-9 starting later next month. 

Feldman, 25, a NJ native and former basketball star at Northeastern University, was most recently working at a St.Louis sports talker KFNS 590 where she was co-hosting an afternoon drive show for the past year.

Feldman began her radio career at WWOZ during her time as a star cast member on MTV’s hit reality TV show, Real World XXIV: New Orleans.  Originally from Collingswood, N.J., she attended Northeastern University on a full athletic scholarship for basketball.  Following the Real World, Feldman moved to St. Louis and co-hosted an afternoon drive sports talk show at KFNS.

Evolving : Clear Channel Boston had appointed Matt Tilden as Local Sales Manager of its new Electronic Dance Music "Evolution 101.7" WEDX-FM. Tilden joined Clear Channel Boston in 2005 as an Account Executive, after working as an AE at crosstown CBS Radio. Evolution 101.7 debuted last month.(BRW 12/20/12).

More throwbacks : The brand new Hot 96.9 has added another  local veteran radio personality to its roster. The station which launched its Rhythmic Adult Contemporary format on January 2nd is the new home for Melissa Eannuzzo, it was announced and was first mentioned here.(BRW 1/4) Hot 96.9 has already signed veteran market personality Pebbles to host mornings. After 17 years in the morning drive at Jamn 94-5, Pebbles had exited crosstown Clear Channel's Rhythmic CHR station in early December.

New format on 96.9 is full of rhythm and pop

After nearly a week of stunting, Greater Media finally replaced its previous news/talk format with a new rhythmic contemporary hits station branded as "Hot 96.9". The playlist will feature artists such as Rhianna, Adele, Black Eyed Peas, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Flo Rida, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Destiny's Child, Michael Jackson and Mary J Blige. Station's new morning personality Pebbles made the announcement at 11am this morning and kicked off the new format by playing the first(Jay Z's "Run This Town") of 13,000 songs in a row.

Greater Media's new Hot 96.9 and its rhythmic hit playlist are clearly aimed at challenging market's hit music leaders Jamn 94-5 and Kiss 108 which are both owned by Clear Channel. The move further crowds Boston radio's pop music landscape which also includes CBS Radio's WODS/Amp 103.3 and WBMX/Mix 104.1 as all these stations chasing the younger listener demographics.

Former WTKK hosts get a fill-in gig at WGBH 89.7...

As WTKK's news/talk format went silent earlier this week, its former morning show hosts keep talking. Jim Braude and Margery Eagan will occupy the WGBH 89.7 studios as guest hosts for a special edition of station's local talk block "Boston Public Radio" this coming Tuesday(1/8) from 12pm-2pm. 96.9's Format Wheel keeps spinning 

And now WTKK 96.9 is "The Bone 96.9". As of 12am Sunday morning(1/6) is playing "Classic Rock That Really Rocks" as the station goes into the fifth day of stunting.  The latest stunt format is online at

Nova fizzles as Mike, Jack and Melissa return

Nova 96.9 lasted two hours longer than its predecessor, Power 96.9, and as of Noon guessed it..once again WTKK changed to a different format. This time the wheel stopped on the wedge titled 'variety hits format' and branded Mike 96.9. If that particular tag sounds very familiar, there's a reason - Mike-FM was part of Boston radio landscape on 93.7FM from 2005 until September 2011(BRW 9/7/11). Like we with Power and Nova, Mike is not expected to be around for more than a day which means listeners and competitors will be checking out 96.9FM over the weekend to see what the next format is going to be.(Ed. Note : that's the whole idea behind this Wheel of Formats week - keep everyone guessing and the buzz going).

In other news, Greatrer Media also made a big splash that it has landed veteran radio programmer/manager "Cadillac Jack" McCartney to be its Director of Programming at Greater Media Boston. He officially begins his new position on Monday (Jan. 7). McCartney recently exited Clear Channel New York where he'd been VP of Programming. This is a return to the Boston radio market for McCartney(BRW 9/29/10), who spent over 20 years there programming both WJMN/Jamn 94-5 and WXKS/Kiss 108, and overseeing the entire Clear Channel Boston cluster before moving to the New York cluster in 2010.

As mentioned yesterday, former Jamn 94-5 morning show co-host, Pebbles, will be part of the new morning show on WTKK-FM. In a related move, her former Jamn colleague and morning show producer Melissa Eannuzzo is joining Pebbles at the new home in similar role as she announced on her Twitter feed.

No new format yet but familiar personality joins 96.9 on-air staff

WTTK 96.9 which is in the midst of the well-publicized format tranformation which kicked off yesterday(BRW 1/2) has just announced that it has hired former WJMN/Jamn 94-5 morning co-host Pebbles to be a part of its morning drive show to debut later this month. It is the first major step in the transition of the station  to music from an news-information-talk format.  The WTKK changeover to music is designed to capture a share of the younger, music-listening FM audience which is more valuable to advertisers versus older demographics that prefer news/talk programming.

As for Pebbles, a local broadcast fixture on Jamn for past 17 years, co-hosted morning drive shows with Baltazar from 1995 to 2001 and then with Ramiro Torres from 2001 until last month(BRW 12/11/12). Prior to Jamn, she served as midday and morning personality at now-defucnt urban contemporary WILD 1090 from 1988 to 1995.

The folks at Greater Media are having some fun playing the Wheel of Formats as they transform their way to a new format on 96.9FM to formally replace News/Talk 96.9.

This morning at 10am, urban contemporary Power 96.9 gave nod to all-dance/electronica Nova 96.9 which is expected to last for the next 24 hours.Where will the wheel eventually end up? There’s no official word yet, although rumors lean toward variety/play-everything format sometime next week. 

Whether that’s for Boston or not, we’ll all have to wait and see.

Greater Media unplugs NewsTalk 96.9 but is the new urban contemporary format a stunt?

Boston has been without a full-time urban contemporary radio format for seven and a half years, but that's all changed this morning. WTKK's talk format signed off to the sounds of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" as Rhianna's current hit "Diamonds" launched brand new Power 96.9 a few moments after 10am.

At 10:06am, Greater Media issued a vague press release which has raised questions whether this format, as it's heard currently, will be a keeper or perhaps something else or some variation of it may be in store for later this week. A bare-bone klutzy-looking website, lack of any kind of social media presence on Twitter or Facebook and sloppily-produced imaging and sounders made many radio observers wonder what Greater Media has in mind as far as the final product goes.

As you may recall, the urban contemporary-formatted WBOT/Hot 97-7  was sold by Radio One to Entercom in 2005 for $30 million and converted to WKAF, serving as a downtown relay for suburban active rock signal WAAF 107.3. Although Boston hasn't had a 24-hour urban format for a while, a number things have changed as far as format's popularity here and elsewhere go. For one thing, urban contemporary format has been steadily declining in popularity nationally over the past few years according to Arbitron study released last month. A clear indication of that was Clear Channel's WJMN/Jamn 94-5 shifting to a more radio-friendly segment of the urban contemporary genre with "Hip Hop and Hit Music" tag in the past couple of years, dropping its longstanding "Hip-Hop and R&B" market image.

Greater Media confirms WTKK is dropping its talk format

WTKK 96.9 will no longer have a news/talk format starting at 10am Wednesday(1/2/13). Station's parent owner Greater Media has officially issued a press release earlier today stating that station's morning show hosts Margery Eagan and Jim Braude will do their farewell 3-hour show to wrap up WTKK's 13-year run as the plug is going to be pulled on FM talker. The station is expected to change to yet-to-be announced music format after 10am tomorrow.

Greater Media, which also owns four other Boston FM stations, has reportedly hired former longtime Kiss 108/Jamn 94-5 program director/operations manager "Cadillac"  Jack McCartney to program the new format on 96.9 as well as its mainstream adult contemporary WMJX/Magic 106.7 which has been without a full-time program director since last March(BRW 3/5/12). As for what new programming may headed to 96.9, rumors of some type of retro rhythmic/dance format might make a debut. The upbeat music format would be somewhat similar to the now-defunct Star 93.7/The Rhythm of Boston which was on the air from 1999 to 2005 and featured a playlist of vintage uptempo pop tracks from the 1970's and 1980's to a more current dance hits on Billboard's Top 40 chart.
