Confirmed : Entercom and CBS will divest five Boston stations as they are preparing to close on merger

Entercom — which owns five radio stations in Boston is planning to divest two of them. In addition, CBS Radio which owns five FM's and 1 AM locally will be shedding three of them according to an internal CBS Radio memo. Five Boston stations to be sold/traded are :  Entercom's talker WRKO 680 and recently launched R&B WKAF 97.7 along with CBS Radio's WBZ/News Radio 1030, classic rocker WZLX 100.7 and WBZ/98.5 The Sports Hub.

The news comes after Entercom and CBS Radio today filed an additional amendment with the Securities Exchange Commission to move forward with a merger first announced in early February.

What the SEC filing also says is that a total of 19 stations will be divested(11 of them are from CBS and 8 are from Entercom). Originally, only 14 stations were going to be divested. Although the SEC amendment doesn't specifically name any of 19 stations in Boston, LA, Sacramento, San Diego and Seattle. But it does say that the Entercom will be adding another 11 stations in three unnamed markets via swaps/trades.

It’s hard to say exactly what’s going to happen in the Boston market after all the sales/trades are completed and who the new owner(s) will be for the five stations mentioned above. But what we do know is the new Entercom-CBS Radio entity will own five stations - WEEI/Sports Radio 93.7, WEEI 850(ESPN Radio), WBMX/Mix 104.1, WODS/AMP 103.3 and WAAF 107.3. .

Nationally, Entercom is adding CBS Radio’s 100-plus stations in nearly 30 markets.

BRW Notebook :

He shoots, he scores : WBZ 98.5/The Sports Hub announced that Judd Sirott has been named the new radio play-by-play voice for The Boston Bruins. 98.5 The Sports Hub  is the official flagship station of the Boston Bruins and the Boston Bruins Radio Network. Sirott joined analyst Bob Beers in the booth. "We are very excited to have someone with the exceptional reputation and experience that Judd has, join our team at The Sports Hub and call the Boston Bruins games on the radio," said Mike Thomas, Vice President of Programming, CBS RADIO Boston & Vice President, Sports Programming, CBS RADIO.

Sirott, 48, served as the fill-in play-by-play man for Chicago Blackhawks games on WGN 720 for the past 10 years. Sirott replaces Dave Goucher, who left in August to do television play-by-playfor the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.

Very interesting. I would figure they would want to keep 98.5 over EEI as it has more of the sports with the Pat's, Bruins, Celtic and Revs. EEI only has the Sox. Also the ratings for 98.5 have been better than EEI with a few exceptions.

So with a new Toucher and Rich contract not happening prior to the spin off to god know who could it mean they're out and avail?

Can’t speak to their contract limbo but thinking they could be holding off as well and looking at *all* the options - in and out of market. They’d be foolish not to.
