Once again Christmas music brings big ratings to Magic 106.7

For the  fourth year, it was Merry Christmas for WMJX/Magic 106.7 as the Holiday ratings showed another win for the perennial top station in the market, according to Nielsen Audio.

WMJX, which went with a Christmas music format from November 20 to Christmas Day(BRW 11/21/15), was rewarded big time.

Greater Media's adult contemporary outlet for 11 months of the year proved that the holiday hits are a winning combination. Magic 106.7 scored a huge 14.8 for the Holiday period from December 3 to December 30, while Patriots-powered WBZ/98.5 The Sports Hub well-distanced at 5.9. (For some comparison, in the December ratings book, WMJX 106.5 beat WBZ 98.5, 8.0 to 6.7). Following that, much of the survey was without change in the rankings. WXKS/Kiss 108 kept hold of number three, dropping to 5.8(from 6.6). WMJX/Magic 106.7's sister station classic hits WROR 105.7 also slipped .7(to 6.2). WBZ/NewsRadio 1030 stayed put at number 5 with a 5.5.

Perhaps, listeners are the Grinch when it comes to country music. WKLB 102.5 had a 1.7 setback to stand at 3.3  in 8th place and IHeart Media's WBWL/The Bull 101.7 dropped from 1.8 to 1.3 in 21st place.
Surprisingly, WBZ/The SportsHub 98.5, despite the Patriots’ playoff run, actually lost listeners. It went from 6.7 to 5.9. Rival WEEI 93.7 also went .8 in negative territory, but finished the period in 6th place at a 4.7.

Ramiro Joins HOT 96.9's Get Up Crew

A day before its 3-year anniversary(1/8/13), Greater Media’ Hot 96.9 gave its listeners a big present - the rhythmic/hip-hop station announced that popular radio personality, Ramiro “The Freakin’ Puerto Rican” Torres is joining Hot 96.9’s GetUp Crew morning drive show with Pebbles, Melissa and Wiggy. As you've read it here first last July(BRW 7/16/15), Ramiro, who was with Hot 96.9's rival Jamn 94-5 for over 20 years, was suddenly taken off the air as he wouldn't negotiate a new contract extension with the Iheart Radio station. After sitting out the remainder of his Jamn contract(with pay), Ramiro became a free agent with the end of 2015. What was the worst kept secret in Boston radio land for past six months is now official - he joins Hot 96-9 and reunites with another Jamn refugee and former longtime on-air partner Pebbles(Susan Semedo).

Ramiro and Pebbles were Jamn's uber popular morning team from October 2001 to December 2012. At the end of 2012, Pebbles left to start up a new competitor WBQT Hot 96-9 in January 2013 after FM Talk 96.9 was silenced. At Hot 96-9, she rejoined her former Jamn program director Jack "Cadillac" McCartney as well as other former longtime co-workers like Melissa and Deirdre Dagata. And now with Ramiro joining, Pebbles and Ramiro are back together in the morning after three years.

“To say I’m excited about joining Pebbles, Melissa and Wiggy on HOT 96.9 would be a MASSIVE understatement!” said Ramiro in Greater Media's press release. “I’d like to thank everyone at Greater Media including Peter Smyth, Mary Menna, Scott Morello and the man who’s been responsible for every single opportunity I’ve had in my career, Cadillac Jack. I can’t wait to become part of your morning routine again!” “Ramiro is quick-witted, a quick study, and an all-out superstar,” said Director of Programming Cadillac Jack. “Greater Media remains committed to building out our team of “A” talent, and this addition truly testifies to that, further bolstering our already strong lineup! I’ve known Ramiro for his entire work life (and more than half his natural life) and can say unequivocally that listeners will welcome him to HOT 96.9 in a big way, as he joins Pebbles, Melissa and Wiggy to round out a team of Boston personalities that people from all backgrounds have grown to know and love."

Girl talk radio : Maybe by design or just a strange coincidence but WMEX 1510 has built an all-female talk line-up from 10am to 7pm. As of this week, longtime Howie Carr executive producer Sandy Shack has joined the Quincy station with a new show from Noon to 3pm. WMEX also features Boston Herald Radio's Morning Meeting with Hillary Chabot and Jaclyn Cashman from 10 to Noon and Michele McPhee from 3pm to 7pm.

Shack began her broadcasting career in the legal wing of the old RKO General to which she was quickly drafted by the programming department of the company's Boston station WRKO. Shack gained the art of producing with the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox and legal advice shows culminating with the two National Radio Hall of Fame inducted shows: "The Jerry Williams Show" and "The Howie Carr Show."

Shack commented, "Who says dreams don't come true. I hope everyone who has been so supportive over the years comes and joins me at my new home 1510 WMEX for my very own show."

WMEX Senior General Manager Bryan Berner added, "We are all excited to bring Sandy into the 1510 WMEX family.Sandy is a perfect match for what we are doing here at 1510 WMEX."

Best time of the year : NFL's playoffs are here and WEEI 93.7 will once again will be the destination to hear almost all games on the radio on the Boston market. The lone exception is next Saturday's Patriots divisional playoff game at Foxborough which will air exclusively on WBZ 98.5/The Sports Hub. WEEI will pick up Westwood One Sports'  audio play-by-play coverage of all four Wild Card Playoff games this weekend (1/9-10), three Divisional Playoffs on January 16th-17th. The network’s coverage also includes the AFC and NFC  Championship games, the Pro Bowl, and the network radio broadcast of Super Bowl 50.

Catching up : As was mentioned here in the last update of 2015(BRW 12/20/15),  Tim Neverett is the new radio co-voice of the Boston Red Sox. He succeeds Dave O’Brien, alongside 33-year Sox Hall of Fame broadcaster Joe Castiglione. O'Brien is shifting over to NESN's booth with the start of spring training. Official press release from WEEI is here....New morning drive traffic pattern at WBZ/News Radio 1030. After 18 years of delivering traffic reports on WBZ from 5:30am to 10am, Rick Simonson has retired. Simonson was technically an employee of Total Traffic Network(previously Metro Traffic) but he was a big part of WBZ's superb morning news drive block. His WBZ colleague and friend Carl Stevens paid tribute to a steady traffic guy with this feature. Simonson's slot is now being covered by Kevin Brennan.
