Kiss 108 jocks pretend Miley Cyrus was at their holiday concert
Radio is still considered theater of the mind.
And, Orson Wells would probably be quite amused if he heard what was going over the air at Kiss 108 last weekend. Or, maybe not.
A little background, first :
The Wrecking Ball hitmaker Miley Cyrus was forced to cancel her appearance at Kiss 108’s annual Jingle Ball concert at TD Garden last Saturday as a major snowstorm hit the East Coast. However, that didn't prevent station’s personalities Romeo, Mike V and promotions director Joe Public from claiming on air that she was in Boston and ready to perform.
Cyrus had no choice but to scrap a performance on the Boston leg of Clear Channel's Jingle Ball concert tour after becoming stranded at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. She performed at NYC's Z100 Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden on Friday night, and the tour buses left promptly for Boston after the event. Band members, dancers, tour staff and other main acts on the Jingle Ball bill, including Selena Gomez, Robin Thicke and Flo Rida, were all able to make it to Boston.
According to New York Post report, Cyrus stayed back in NYC, shopped all day on Fifth Avenue and arrived late for a scheduled private jet from Teterboro Airport to Logan, which ended up being canceled because of the snowstorm. Meanwhile, many commercial flights were still getting to Boston, but Teterboro doesn't have the equipment or resources to remove the snow like JFK and La Guardia airports do.
And now, the main act :
Miley or no Miley, the show had to go on. So, Kiss 108 jocks who were broadcasting live backstage at TD Garden made belief that Cyrus was already there. Meanwhile, concertgoers in their cars heading to TD Garden and/or Kiss 108 listeners at home, kept hearing these bits on the air :
"I'm standing outside Miley Cyrus's dressing room. She's about to go onstage and soundcheck" exclaimed station’s afternoon DJ Romeo."We'll bring it to you live."
Station’s longtime promotions director Joe Public interviewed by Romeo even claimed he had just tripped over the singer's dancer and then bumped onto Miley : "Dude it was so embarrassing.”
Listen here to some of the on-air breaks where Kiss 108’s jocks hyped up Miley’s appearance, before they eventually came clean when Cyrus spoke by phone with newcomer Mike V explaining why she couldn’t twerk her way to Boston.
While Cyrus apologized for the cancellation and blamed it on the bad weather, her disgruntled fans who paid hundreds of dollars for tickets to see Cyrus have taken to social media sites and now launched a petition on Change.org urging her to play a free show in the area.(as of this writing the petition titled "Kiss 108 : Refund Jingle Ball Tickets" had 175 signatures")
The petition suggests gig-goers were not told about Cyrus' no-show until after the final act came off stage, and they haven't been allowed to claim refunds, so they want the singer to return to Boston to make good on her promise to perform there.
