Afrer deciding on the formats, the second most important decision for any major market station is the morning show. A strong morning show usually drives the rest of the broadcast day and can generate more revenue than rest of the station's dayparts. So when you hear a new, younger and hipper morning voices at Mix 98.5 after the New Year's, the decision to shake up the morning drive at the Hot AC station could be best described as somewhat of a gamble considering that John Lander's unknown and unfamilair replacements are coming up from radio market size #49 to a major Top 10 market battleground like Boston.
The new morning team that Mix will introduce very shortly will be Karson(Tager) and Kennedy(Elsey) who did a very successful morning show at a Top 40 station WHBQ/Q107.5 in Memphis for four years. The morning duo was broken up at the end of April with Tager being sent to the beach and Kennedy given a new partner(Laney). [Ed. Note : Slight correction to yesterday's update, only one half of the current "Kennedy and Laney" from WHBQ/Q107.5FM is coming to Mix in the mornings. That being the lovely Kennedy, of course.]
Mix is looking to boost its numbers in the 25-54 age group, the one most coveted by advertisers, espcailly in the morning where the station badly lags behind the leaders and direct competitors like Matt Siegel on Kiss 108 and soft rock on Magic 106.7FM. If the new younged-up Mix morning show could make a big buzz and make the numbers move up, it would have a big impact on the station's overall revenue, which in this day and age is the most important piece of the puzzle. And if the newcomers don't make a dent in radio icon Matt Siegel's huge numbers, it's back to square one.
Only time and the new Portable People Meters(PPM) will tell...
BRW Notebook :
Happy trails to you : Tom Taylor who publishes a daily radio newsletter for Radio-Info.com had this doubts about Mix' new morning team in this morning's e-mail : "Lander’s replacement will reportedly be a morning show out of Memphis top 40 station WHBQ/107.5 – Kennedy and Laney.” Dunno about that yet..." Ok, Tom, so it will be "Karson and Kennedy", not "Kennedy and Maney". My bad. But, maybe you can invite yourself to a going-away bash Karson is throwing at a local bar next Thursday night, just in case you happen to be travelling thru the Memphis area...
Let the games begin : Contract talks continue between Entercom Boston and Glenn Ordway, the 13-year host of the super popular "Big Show" (weekdays, 2-6 p.m) on SportsRadio WEEI AM 850. Ordway first joined WEEI when it was still an all-news station on the former AM 590 frequency(He and the legendary Johny Most moved from WRKO with the Celtics radio package in 1987). Yesterday(12/11), Ordway did his last show before his scheduled vacation break and the Herald reports there's still no new deal. The current five-year deal expires in 3 weeks.(Ed. Note : I just can't see WEEI without Glenn. Can you? Leave a comment below or answer the poll question). If you need a little reminder, Ordway's last contract talks in 2003 also went down to the wire so this is not a new situation for him and his agent.....While Entercom's financial woes have been well publicized in recent months, the station and its ownership are still heavily funding and throwing money at the WEEI.com project as Adam Reilly reports in the Phoenix this week.
