Mix to take a gamble on the new morning voices

Afrer deciding on the formats, the second most important decision for any major market station is the morning show. A strong morning show usually drives the rest of the broadcast day and can generate more revenue than rest of the station's dayparts. So when you hear a new, younger and hipper morning voices at Mix 98.5 after the New Year's, the decision to shake up the morning drive at the Hot AC station could be best described as somewhat of a gamble considering that John Lander's unknown and unfamilair replacements are coming up from radio market size #49 to a major Top 10 market battleground like Boston.

The new morning team that Mix will introduce very shortly will be Karson(Tager) and Kennedy(Elsey) who did a very successful morning show at a Top 40 station WHBQ/Q107.5 in Memphis for four years. The morning duo was broken up at the end of April with Tager being sent to the beach and Kennedy given a new partner(Laney). [Ed. Note : Slight correction to yesterday's update, only one half of the current "Kennedy and Laney" from WHBQ/Q107.5FM is coming to Mix in the mornings. That being the lovely Kennedy, of course.]

Mix is looking to boost its numbers in the 25-54 age group, the one most coveted by advertisers, espcailly in the morning where the station badly lags behind the leaders and direct competitors like Matt Siegel on Kiss 108 and soft rock on Magic 106.7FM. If the new younged-up Mix morning show could make a big buzz and make the numbers move up, it would have a big impact on the station's overall revenue, which in this day and age is the most important piece of the puzzle. And if the newcomers don't make a dent in radio icon Matt Siegel's huge numbers, it's back to square one.

Only time and the new Portable People Meters(PPM) will tell...

BRW Notebook :

Happy trails to you : Tom Taylor who publishes a daily radio newsletter for Radio-Info.com had this doubts about Mix' new morning team in this morning's e-mail : "Lander’s replacement will reportedly be a morning show out of Memphis top 40 station WHBQ/107.5 – Kennedy and Laney.” Dunno about that yet..." Ok, Tom, so it will be "Karson and Kennedy", not "Kennedy and Maney". My bad. But, maybe you can invite yourself to a going-away bash Karson is throwing at a local bar next Thursday night, just in case you happen to be travelling thru the Memphis area...

Let the games begin : Contract talks continue between Entercom Boston and Glenn Ordway, the 13-year host of the super popular "Big Show" (weekdays, 2-6 p.m) on SportsRadio WEEI AM 850. Ordway first joined WEEI when it was still an all-news station on the former AM 590 frequency(He and the legendary Johny Most moved from WRKO with the Celtics radio package in 1987). Yesterday(12/11), Ordway did his last show before his scheduled vacation break and the Herald reports there's still no new deal. The current five-year deal expires in 3 weeks.(Ed. Note : I just can't see WEEI without Glenn. Can you? Leave a comment below or answer the poll question). If you need a little reminder, Ordway's last contract talks in 2003 also went down to the wire so this is not a new situation for him and his agent.....While Entercom's financial woes have been well publicized in recent months, the station and its ownership are still heavily funding and throwing money at the WEEI.com project as Adam Reilly reports in the Phoenix this week.

Not a chance ordway leaves. I don't see the bigwigs over at Entercom Boston trusting the show in the hands of the bumbling Pete Sheppard, nor do I see them bringing in someone from either out of the market or a familiar voice from within the station. Both Glen and Dale Arnold will be buried underneath the console before either of them are let go.

Anyone can get ratings with the success of boston's teams---share price is almost zero, so they owe it to the investors to get the same bang for much less bucks than the fat dwarf wants.

WEEI's problems began when they lost their bet salesman, Mike Marcello. With him went a laundry list of big spending clients.

Glenn will be missed, if that's the case, but to be honest with you, myself along with most of my friends enjoy the show a lot more when Pete is hosting

Ordway is the most important air person on the station. He defines the sound for the entire station. Sheppard is a medium market guy at best. Sheppard has no career without Ordway. I would have let Dennis and Callahan go before Ordway.

If he does leave ...as he said lets see if its Belichick and his system to make Cassel good or was it Brady....Well lets see if its the Boston Sports Fans or Glen Ordway

I smell a ruse...a la the Mikey Adams "lock-in". Three weeks of will he or won't he talk during an otherwise dead period on the air (fill-ins and best-ofs through the holidays), then a triumphant return on January 5.

WEEI's leverage in this is too much. There's no viable option outside of EEI for Ordway barring that perpetually rumored FM Sports talker becoming reality. And the ace in the hole is they've got Felger stashed on dotCom just waiting to take over. Felger would not hesitate to step in and take over afternoon drive, and if the Entercom big-wigs buy into the "it's the market, not the talent" philosophy, they won't hesitate to slide him in there.

On BMX: Great. Another out of town mornign show heavy on celeb gossip and the usual crap.

This is why most morning shows fail. They're created by programmers who move up because they yes the GM to death (and the GM knows only how to sell, not how to program). And programmers are basically stupid people who are capable only of doing what has already been done elsewhere

Celebrity birthdays anyone?

Yeah, because the #1 ranked stations in markets like NYC (Z100), LA (KIIS) & Boston (WXKS) are stations that are "heavy on celeb gossip and the usual crap" and who on Earth would want that burden. 8-)

Seriously,

I can't even listen when the buffoon's take over in Ordway's abscence. Truth be told I'm sick od Ordway's schtick as well. (on the fence, Bosox brown nosing, talk over all the callers, surround himself with marbled mouth dummies, etc.)
I enjoy Felger, at least he says he thinks, and am I asking too much if I'd like to raise the sports talk and drop the hyperbole?
Laughs are a must and not the fake laughs directed to the winer line callers.
Fire:
Pete the Meat, DeAwful,Smerlas & Butch
More:
Felger, Bradford, new guests
Less:
Ordway, Buckley

eddie andelman was right. when he left he cashed his entercom stocks in at about $50.00 a share. now the stocks value is under $1.00. staggering!!!!!! entercom according to andelman overspent on howie carr, dennis and callahan and ordway. andelman was right about weei employees scalping patriot tickets[fred smerlas, deossie, shepherd, ordway],charites where about 25% went to the actual charity [deossie, smerlas]. ordway is a back stabber who tried to take johnny most's job. he also did some viscious things to ted sarandis. ordway sucks and i hope they meaning weei realize this and do the right thing and let him go!

Karson and Kennedy are the best morning show we have ever had in Memphis and they will be missed terribly I hope Boston enjoys them as much as we did

Ordway is terrible. Shouts down everyone including his co-hosts! Gives me a headache. Fred & Steve do too, but that's their schtick as "color" guys not the host. Pete not great, but at least he let's the show breathe!!! Much better with Ordway gone. Felger is great in the AM too. Find a slot for Felger, he's smarmy but entertaining.

Karson and Kennedy will ROCK Boston. PAY ATTENTION... you will love them..
